Joined by family and friends from across the decades, Brightwater Madeley resident Mr Gordon Ewers celebrated his 107th Birthday in style today.

First up was a birthday party at Maddie’s Café at Brightwater Madeley with his family (including his daughters pictured top left) and friends in the morning and then more cake in the afternoon with his fellow residents in Trover House. This weekend he will celebrate at another party with more family.

Up until six weeks ago, Mr Ewers lived independently in his own villa at Brightwater’s Kingsway Court Retirement Village in Madeley. Now that he needs a little extra support, he lives at our aged care home, Brightwater Madeley, just across the road.

Mr Ewers has seen a lot in his 107 years. Born in 1916, he lived through both World War 1, World War 2, the Great Depression and most recently the Covid-19 pandemic.

One of three boys, Mr Ewers grew up in Applecross where his father was the headmaster of the two-classroom primary school.

As children, he and his two brothers used to play by the river and in the bush with home-made toys.

Mr Ewers won a scholarship to Perth Modern School and, after he graduated, worked in the Customs Department where he had a long and fulfilling career.

He and his wife had 63 years of marriage and had two daughters, Marian and Shirley.

He is a lover of music and poetry, played golf and tennis regularly and his Christian faith and leadership in his Church was, and continues to be, integral to who he is.

Marian and Shirley said they were really proud to have him as their Dad, adding that he was the greatest example they could have now and while growing up.

Mr Ewers is officially the oldest man in Western Australia and the third oldest man in Australia.

In his speech on his birthday Mr Ewers said "he was a rich man – not because he has much money – but in the friends he has made over the years".

“I feel very blessed with the friendship of so many good people and I want to thank everyone for celebrating with me today."

He said he had been very blessed in his life and was very grateful.

Service Manager at Brightwater Madeley, Surabh Nair, said Mr Ewers is such a vibrant man and brought so much joy to staff and other residents.

“Gordon has seen so much in his life and he such a kind and giving man,” he added.

Happy birthday to Mr Ewers, from everyone at Brightwater!
