How to get started with the NDIS.

You must have an NDIS plan to access our NDIS services, and if you’re ready to get started we are here to provide support with your NDIS application.

Our expert team can assist you in successfully navigating through the NDIS process, to ensure you receive the best quality services that you need.

This step-by-step guide will help you understand how to get started with the National Disability Insurance Scheme.

1. Talk to our team

Before you have your meeting with the NDIA, we can offer a free pre-planning service. This will help you to prepare for the meeting, and ensure you get a comprehensive, well-funded plan that works for you.

2. Get access to the NDIS

To be covered by the NDIS, you’ll need to:

  • Be under the age of 65
  • Have an impairment that is likely to be permanent and has a significant impact on your everyday life
  • Be an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or permanent visa holder
  • Live in an NDIS area

If you meet the access requirements, your funding eligibility will be assessed by an NDIS representative. They’ll also advise when you can access your NDIS plan.

3. Develop your NDIS plan with help from us

Once you’re eligible, you’ll develop your personal plan with one of our NDIS representatives. Your plan contains an outline of your goals, what you need to achieve and the funding you’ll receive.

These goals will determine what NDIS services you are eligible for – such Therapy Skills for Living, Behavioural Assessment & Support and Equipment & Assistive Technology.

Download our interactive booklet to help with your planning meeting.

4. Manage your NDIS plan

Once you’ve got a plan in order, you can choose how you’ll manage your NDIS support. Your options include:

  • Self-managed - You pay providers and manage any admin yourself.
  • Provider-managed - You choose a provider to manage all payments on your behalf and to help with service agreements, hiring staff and preparing reports about your NDIS funding. At Brightwater, we have a support coordination service that can help you make the most of your NDIS funding.
  • Shared management - For example, you might want to manage your consumables but let someone else manage your therapy funds.
