Delivering ice cream in style

Aged care residents at Brightwater Onslow Gardens in Subiaco have been gifted a bespoke wooden ice cream cart by the Karrinyup Community Men’s Shed, bringing a fun twist to dessert time.

Kingsley McGuire, Deane Palmer, Peter Polain and Jeff Crookes from the Men’s Shed worked together to build the ice cream cart, and presented it to Brightwater residents at a recent morning tea, serving ice cream from the cart with residents, staff and visitors.

Each of the men used their own personal skills to create the cart. Retired Architect, Kingsley, used his structural design knowledge to create the vision of the cart, and Jeff used his woodwork knowledge to bring the vision to life.

This project was made possible by Brightwater’s Life’s Possibilities fundraising initiative and has been taken up by various Men’s Sheds, including Karrinyup Community Men’s Shed, whose team have been kept busy creating ice cream carts for a number of Brightwater aged care homes.

Brightwater CEO Jennifer Lawrence said the Life’s Possibilities program makes projects like the ice cream carts possible, and help to create fun and memorable experiences for clients.

“Our priority is the happiness and health of our clients and it is projects like this that help us bring joy and create special memories,” Ms Lawrence says.

“Partnering with the Men’s Shed for this project also allows us to support the wonderful community and social inclusion initiatives that are made possible through the Men’s Shed.”

Men’s Sheds in Australia play an important role in the community by providing meeting places where men can find social support. They assist in the prevention of social isolation by providing a safe, friendly and welcoming place for men to work on meaningful projects and to contribute to the wider community.

The Life’s Possibilities program gives clients the chance to enjoy experiences that most take for granted. The program provides opportunities for the socialisation and wellbeing of our aged care and disability clients, enabling individuals and groups to enjoy outings, in-house events, new programs and experiences.
