Former Brightwater client Mark Elsing is embarking on a world record challenge in December to raise money for the place he credits with his second chance at life, Brightwater Oats Street.

Mark hopes to set a record for the longest distance travelled in a wheelchair using just one arm and has been in training for the last 2 months.

Last week he had the chance to meet former professional rugby league footballer and extreme fitness challenge extraordinaire, Matt Fuller from Fuller Fitness.

Matt took Mark’s through his paces on his favourite training machine – ‘The Grinder’ – and was so impressed with Mark’s attitude and determination, he has signed on to be his personal trainer in the lead up to the big day.

“In today’s society I think personally too many people become the victim of their unfortunate circumstances.

“When I first spoke to Mark, I could tell straight away that he wasn’t a victim.  He was a survivor,” Matt said.

Matt said he and Mark spoke about his positivity and his determination to get through each stage of the rehabilitation program, which he found very inspiring.

“I have worked with the Australian Paralympic Wheelchair Rugby Team over a 4-year period. In that time, I didn’t see people with a disability, I saw mindsets and strength.  I see this in Mark too.”

Matt said he was confident he could help Mark with his strength and conditioning and mental mind set to further enhance his skills and help him achieve his goals.

During their training sessions, Matt plans on working on Mark’s muscle strength and muscle endurance through a number of different exercises to help him achieve this world record.

“This will include free and machine weights/pully systems and the use of an ergo grinder.

“I’ll also spend the time to work on Mark’s mental strength through a number of motivational techniques I have learnt over the years in my personal and sporting and life experiences.”
