“They are the best friends you can ever have” – Danny, Brightwater Warnbro resident

It’s National Volunteers Week this week, and we would like to say thank you to those who have enriched the lives of our residents through volunteering. Whether it has been letter writing as part of our virtual volunteer program, or visiting our residents in person – we thank you.

Although this year has seen our volunteer program look a little different due to ongoing Covid-19 lockdowns, it’s given us the time to evaluate our program and see the opportunities where we can build even stronger connections between our residents and volunteers.

We are excited to reveal more about our new volunteer program very soon, but in the meantime, let’s celebrate our volunteers, including John Quilty and Erica Peet, who have been supporting residents at our Brightwater Supported Independent Living Home in Warnbro for more than 20 years.

Brightwater Warnbro resident Danny, who goes on regular outings to places like the Mandurah foreshore with John and Erica says they are his best friends.

“I’ve been volunteering with Erica, since this Brightwater establishment opened, which from memory was in 2000. The residents have become great friends to me and to Erica, and I find them very inspirational. They are such great people, we’ve grown to love them, they are like family to us,” said John.

Erica said you learn a lot about yourself whilst volunteering.

“You learn a lot from the residents. You learn compassion. The residents are gentle, loving people, and they all have a good sense of humour. It’s a pleasure to go out with them, it really is,” said Erica.

The team at Brightwater Warnbro are so grateful for the time and effort that John and Erica give to the residents.

“Having the volunteers here is absolutely incredible. We have residents that don’t talk a lot and they’re now coming out of their shell completely. We would love to say a huge thank you to our volunteers, and all our volunteers we’ve had over the years” – Tayla Thompson

“John and Erica are fabulous volunteers. We’re so lucky to have them. They have been here for many years and we all love them. They do a great job with the guys” – Carmel Martin
