We are delighted to continue our partnership with Downer Group for another year, which saw smiles beaming from ear to ear once again, with the success of the annual Downer Getaway Camp. The camp, held at Fairbridge Village in Pinjarra, is situated on a former farm school in the South West. The Village is now predominantly used for community camps and tourism purposes.
In 2017, the camp had a focus on all things sensory, with team games and music allowing participants to express their creativity, with arts and crafts, and dancing. Last year’s camp had a strong focus on the great outdoors, with activities including archery, abseiling, canoeing and team games suitable for clients with stronger physical capabilities.
This year, the Downer Getaway Camp amalgamated the arts and outdoor adventures of previous years, which saw 20 Brightwater disability clients take part in wheelchair abseiling, dress ups and a treasure hunt, archery, board games and mountain biking, with Break the Boundary, who we would like to say a big thank you to for generously offering ten spots over the next year to take our lucky residents out and about.
Brightwater Volunteer Services Coordinator, Wendy, said Brightwater client Mark was geared up to abseil the 20 metre tower in a wheelchair and was talking to Downer employee and champion volunteer Barry and I, and said ‘I thought with my disability I would never do anything like this but here I am. Thank you Downer for making this possible’.
Each year, the camp has proven to be a fulfilling experience for residents, staff and volunteers from Downer and Brightwater and we are very grateful to Downer for making this dream a reality for the past four years.
