A Night of Bold Ideas

Brightwater Research And Innovation Showcase Event

Brightwater’s Research and Innovation Showcase

Brightwater’s recent Research and Innovation Showcase at the University of Western Australia provided an opportunity for attendees to explore fresh perspectives on the future of dementia care and social isolation in Western Australia.

An Evening of Stories and Innovation

The event brought together people from across the sector to share ideas and real stories about aged care, with a focus on how the field is evolving to meet the changing needs of those living with dementia.

Highlights of the Evening

Maree McCabe AM, former CEO of Dementia Australia, opened the night with a reflection on her personal connection to dementia care. She emphasised why now is a crucial time to reconsider our approach to supporting those living with dementia.

Dr Elissa Burton, Curtin University and Brightwater Harken Research Fellow, highlighted the increasing number of people living with young onset dementia - in their 30s, 40s, and 50s. Dr Burton’s presentation encouraged a broader understanding of what support and inclusion can look like for this group.

A notable highlight was Abi the robot, created by Grace Brown during the COVID-19 pandemic. Initially developed to ease feelings of isolation, Abi has since been introduced into aged care settings as a companion to residents. This project reflects how thoughtful innovation can bring meaningful change to everyday life.

One of Brightwater’s hackathon teams introduced Pigeon Tales, a modern take on the traditional newspaper. Designed to help seniors stay connected to family and community, it offers curated content that balances nostalgia with new technology.

Looking Ahead

Events like this offer a chance to reflect, connect, and consider how we can continue to improve care for those living with dementia in Western Australia.
