Welcoming the Lunar New Year

Two Brightwater residents visit Luna New Year Celebration multicultural event in Perth 2026

Lunar New Year celebrations are always full of colour, music and tradition, and this year was no exception.

Thanks to support from Life’s Possibilities, two residents recently attended a vibrant celebration hosted by the Association for Culturally Appropriate Services (AfCAS) in Perth, welcoming the Year of the Horse.

The event brought together a rich mix of cultural performances, including Okinawan, Ryukyu and Chinese dance, as well as energetic Eisa drumming. One of the highlights was the lively performance by the Eagle Eye Dancing Troupe, featuring Yangge dance alongside drumming and singing.

For residents Kwok and Columbur, both originally from Hong Kong, the celebration carried a special meaning.

Columbur’s wife joined him at the event, and the two enjoyed sitting together watching the performances before heading to the buffet to share a meal.

For Kwok, the food was a particularly meaningful part of the day. Having previously worked as a Dim Sum chef, he often misses the flavours from his culture, so the chance to enjoy traditional dishes again brought a big smile to his face.

Events like this are a beautiful reminder of how powerful culture, community and familiar traditions can be. Through music, dance and shared food, the celebration created a meaningful moment of connection and joy.
