We have an incredible group of staff at Brightwater’s Dementia-specific aged care home The Village, and one of those people is Bronnie Edgcombe. Bronnie is our Administration Assistant at The Village and the smiling face that greets you as you enter through our doors.
Bronnie has been with Brightwater for just over two years and has worked in various areas of disability and mental health over the past 17 years.
I have also worked with wards of the court and urgent foster situations spanning about 20 years, all of which was achieved whilst also working at other jobs and raising my four amazing children. I have been very privileged to work with some of the most beautiful people both young and old many of whom I still have bonds with today.
Bronnie says it’s the people who make the job so rewarding.
I believe in what I do and that in some small way if I am able to brighten one other person’s day then my day and my being here has been worth every second. It is not an easy role and at times it has been incredibly challenging, I am so lucky to work with so many amazing people, not just my work colleagues, but the incredibly able adults in high care dementia, each of whom have not only amazing personas but so much to offer each and every one of us who takes the time to get to know them.
The smiles, the good mornings, the odd dance and song, a little bit of craziness and a lot of love: How could anyone not love having a job that gives you all of this and so much more every single day? This is the reason I do my job and I’m grateful every day for being given this amazing opportunity. Everyday there is more to experience and more to love.
Bronnie loves getting to know the residents and connecting with them.
I hope I make a difference to our clients by taking time to acknowledge them, to make a cuppa and take a moment in time with them. I know that in more recent times as I have got to know some of them better, they wait for me to come in and some even sit up from lying on the couch to say good morning and ask how I am.
I have one resident who I find super special and she always comes and knocks on my office door to say hello to me. Another one seeks me out if he is worried about anything because he remembers my name as it is the same as his Mother’s. There are so many special moments. The wonderful residents remember kindness, happiness, old times and tenderness.
