Molokhia, memories and a touch of Egypt

Brightwater Supported Independent Living Client Edmond celebrates his birthday at Kingsley Young Onset Dementia SIL with family and staff

Edmond celebrated his birthday in February surrounded by his wife Charlene, family and housemates, with staff going above and beyond to make the day truly special. The space was decorated with care, setting the scene for a celebration filled with warmth, laughter and togetherness.

A special part of the day was the food. Charlene lovingly prepared a traditional Egyptian dish, Molokhia and rice. It’s a comforting meal made of Egyptian spinach with chicken and garlic served over rice, and it brought a familiar taste of home to the table. Edmond thoroughly enjoyed it, and it didn’t take long for him to polish off the plate!

It was especially meaningful to see Edmond’s reaction as Arabic was spoken around him. Hearing his family converse in their native language, and watching staff learn and share a few Arabic words with him, brought a beautiful sense of connection. Familiar language and familiar flavours created a moment that spoke for itself.

Of course, there was cake, conversation and plenty of smiles shared throughout the day. But more than anything, the celebration honoured Edmond’s culture, his family and the life he has lived.

It was a birthday filled with heart, home and everything that matters most.
