Life’s Possibilities program helps John East honour comrades and country

For Korean War Veteran and Cove resident John East, every day is a day of remembrance and commemoration.

“I lost a hell of a lot of mates in Korea,” said John, 89. “I think about them a lot.”

Determined to honour those who never returned from war, John requested an Australian flag through Life’s Possibilities that he could raise and salute each morning.

“I take a lot of pride in raising the flag and paying my respects,” said John. “I stand up from my wheelchair, place my hand on my heart and salute. It brings tears to my eyes.”

Honouring tradition brings John meaning and purpose

John joined the army in 1953 at 16 years of age. “It was just the Australian thing to do, to join the army,” said John. “I became a driver in Korea and would be sent down to Seoul to get supplies.”

John’s time in the armed forces continues to shape his life to this day. He carries the Ode with him at all times and finds strong purpose in raising the flag as it enables him to fulfill his duty and service to Australia.

“The flag isn’t allowed to touch the floor,” explained John. “Sitting in my wheelchair, I have it on my lap. I take a lot of pleasure in folding the flag up. Even if it’s wet, I never let it touch the ground. If it’s soaking wet, I’ll hang it up in the shower.”

“I like when the wind is there to blow it,” John adds. “Thank you to Life’s Possibilities.”
