April 11th marks World Parkinson's Day, which is dedicated to raising awareness about Parkinson's disease, a neurological disorder that affects movement. It’s a day when we stand in solidarity with millions of people worldwide living with this condition, acknowledging their struggles and celebrating their courage.

This year, Brightwater is honoured to share a special video that delves deep into the lives of two of our residents living with Parkinson’s, as well as insights from a dedicated senior physiotherapist who is walking this journey with them.

Watch the video above.

Tailored therapies to suit different challenges

Parkinson’s disease, with its myriad of symptoms ranging from tremors to stiffness and slowing of movement, demands a multifaceted approach to therapy. Our video shines a light on the personalised therapeutic journeys our residents embark on, through stories shared by Madeley residents Garth and Jacqueline. From physical therapy that enhances mobility to speech therapy aiding communication, it’s a testament to the tailored care and support provided at Brightwater, ensuring each individual’s needs are met with precision and compassion.

Every Parkinson's diagnosis looks different

Parkinson’s affects everyone differently. This personal variance underscores the message shared by our residents, revealing how their diagnoses, symptoms, and coping mechanisms differ. Their stories serve as a powerful reminder of the importance of personalised care and the need to view each individual beyond their diagnosis.

The power of positivity

Facing Parkinson’s is undoubtedly challenging, yet, as highlighted in our video, the power of positive thinking plays a pivotal role in navigating this condition. Our residents and their physiotherapist share uplifting insights into how maintaining a positive outlook has significantly impacted their ability to manage symptoms and embrace joy in their lives, despite the hurdles.

Life altered - not diminished

The daily lives of those living with Parkinson’s undergo significant changes, adapting to new routines and methods to accomplish everyday tasks. Garth and Jacqueline open up about the adjustments they’ve had to make, but more importantly, how they’ve found new ways to enjoy life, remain active, and keep connected with their loved ones.

As we observe World Parkinson’s Day, let’s remind ourselves of the strength and resilience embodied by those living with Parkinson's. Their journeys are filled with challenges, yet also with moments of triumph and immense hope. By sharing this video, Brightwater aims to enlighten, inspire, and foster a deeper understanding of Parkinson's disease, showcasing the real experiences of those directly affected.

To our residents, their families, and everyone battling Parkinson’s, we stand with you. Today, we honour your strength, your courage, and your unwavering spirit. Let’s continue to support each other, spread awareness, and work towards a world where Parkinson’s can be faced with even greater hope and fewer obstacles.
