How we do it

Brightwater addresses the unique needs of younger people with dementia through support and services designed to promote independence, wellbeing, and community engagement. We partner with individuals and families living with younger onset dementia (YOD) to ensure they receive support services available to them. We aim to help people live their best possible lives in a way that’s meaningful to them.

Supported Independent Living

Clients are supported to make choices to maximise independence and wellbeing, including:

  • Facilitating active participation and social engagement in the community
  • Supporting family members, helping them navigate challenges and providing them with the resources they need.
  • Improving access to services to ensure clients receive the specialised care they need
  • Promoting better health and wellbeing outcomes for people living with YOD through our holistic and person-centred approach
  • Brightwater’s Supported Independent Living accommodation designed specifically for individuals living with YOD.

Brightwater’s Capacity Building Team

We use a team approach to provide support for clients with YOD. Our multidisciplinary team works collaboratively to address the physical, emotional, and social needs of our clients to maximise long-term quality of life, including occupational therapists, speech pathologists, physiotherapists, PBS practitioners, and support coordinators.

Backed by research

Brightwater is the only WA disability services provider with a dedicated Research Centre. We collaborate with national and international universities to find innovative solutions to improve the quality of the lives of people we care for.

The life of a young person is changed by a parent’s diagnosis of Younger Onset Dementia (YOD) or Acquired Brain Injury (ABI). Currently, children and young people with an affected parent struggle with ad-hoc support and a lack of appropriate resources tailored to supporting their needs. Keeping Us In Mind provides a range of children’s books, and resources and guides for supporting adults to assist families with a YOD or ABI diagnosis.
