Welcome to Piara Waters

Opened in mid-2024, Brightwater’s world-class campus is purpose-built to support people with Huntington’s disease.

Piara Waters was co-designed with families, allied health, advocacy and clinical organisations to ensure residents with Huntington’s disease experience excellent standards of care and the highest quality of life.

Specialist Disability Accommodation

Piara Waters’ residential campus includes 21 bedrooms and ensuites in seven houses, each with specialist assistive equipment and leading-edge technology. The homes in this exclusive Huntington’s disease gated community are certified Specialist Disability Accommodation for people with extreme functional impairment or very high needs.

Each private room is designed for purpose and comfort, with a personal TV and built-in cabinetry with storage. Rooms are accessibility enabled and prepared for hoist installation if necessary. The contemporary layout provides personal privacy and light touch support from staff, while fostering a sense of community with neighbours in shared living spaces.

Residents enjoy a sensory garden with zones for living, relaxing and socialising. Plenty of parking to encourage visitors and security features at key entry points provide peace of mind for residents, their families and friends.

Supported Independent Living

A collaborative approach is used to ensure residents at Piara Waters remain involved in their own care along with input from family and friends. Support includes:

  • Day support – 3:6 staff
  • 24/7 care over the course of disease progression
  • Staff experienced with behavioural and physical aspects of Huntington’s disease
  • Support to establish structure and routine during early disease progression
  • Daily self-care and management
  • Oversight of severe dysphagia, wound care, PEG (tube feeding), and high intensity support
  • Collaborative approach to palliative care which includes residents and their families
  • Reconnecting residents with family and their broader community
  • Onsite meal preparation and laundry, allowing residents to engage with personal care activities.

Backed by research

Brightwater is the only WA disability services provider with a dedicated Research Centre. We collaborate with national and international universities to find innovative solutions to improve the quality of the lives of people we care for.

  • 2023: Brightwater participated in a study on optimising the quality of clinical data to improve care delivery and clinical outcomes (OPTIMISE). Piara Waters’ residents benefit directly from the measures put in place as a result of this research.
  • 2021: Nutrition and Huntington’s disease: Comparison between specialised and non- specialised facilities.
