Posted on Wednesday, May 8, 2019

Six staff from Brightwater recently presented at the Australasian Society for the Study of Brain Impairment (ASSBI) conference in Wellington, New Zealand. The conference focused on research in the field of neurological impairment including brain trauma, stroke, neurodegenerative disability (such as Huntington’s disease) and dementia.

Brightwater’s contingent included Janet Wagland, General Manager Community, and five staff members across the therapy teams at Brightwater’s Oats Street Brain Injury Rehabilitation Centre, Brightwater Marangaroo, and the Brightwater Research Centre.

Our strength in brain injury research was presented via five poster presentations:

  • Community rehabilitation: Increasing independence regardless of time since acquired brain injury
  • Supporting a client with an acquired brain injury to navigate the criminal justice system: A case study review
  • Improving functional independence and quality of life for clients with an acquired brain injury undergoing community rehabilitation using assistive devices for toileting
  • Establishing a framework to better manage client and families’ perception and expectations of recovery after acquired brain injury within a community based residential rehabilitation setting
  • Outcome measurement within a complex model of neurodisability rehabilitation

In conjunction with MindLink, we were pleased to award Vanessa Rausa - a Clinical Neuropsychology Registrar from the Murdoch Children’s Research Institute in Melbourne - the MindLink Brightwater Award for Interdisciplinary Practice for her work in developing the HeadCheck app. This technology assists parents, first aiders, trainers and coaches to recognise and manage the recovery of concussion in children.

In addition to being on the ASSBI National Committee, Janet will be co-convening the Perth conference in May 2020, with a focus on Getting on with the business of living. You can find out more about ASSBI on their website.
