Community Housing Grant refurbishments at four of our Supported Independent Living homes

About the Community Housing Grant
Brightwater has received a Community Housing Grant to refurbish some of our homes owned by the Department of Communities.
The program is funded by the State Government and covers specific works including bathroom and kitchen upgrades and improved access to houses.
Announced in June 2020, SHERP is the largest housing maintenance and refurbishment program in WA’s history. It will see the refurbishment of up to 1500 public and community houses, supported accommodation facilities and residential group homes.
We were delighted to receive the grant and to begin exciting refurbishment works at the sites listed below.
Project details and updates

Brightwater Bentley
Works started in early February and finished in March. They included:
- Ensuite renovations in House 3 and House 6
- Upgrading the entry door at each house to automatic doors with access cards.
The update resulted in a major quality of live improvement for one client in particular who is now able to access his ensuite bathroom using a manual wheelchair.
Update 16 February 2023: The project is progressing well. The change in dimensions for the new bathrooms will make a significant difference for the clients who use them.
Update 3 February 2023: A site office and a storage area has been set up in the garage in House 3.

Brightwater Maylands
The majority of works took place in March and April and included:
- Bathrooms, improving wheelchair accessibility
- Flooring in common areas (House 2)
- Entry door automation
- The kitchen in House 2
- A beam for the ceiling hoist – two rooms
- Updates to the gate and entry to the rear house
21 April 2023: The majority of works are complete, with some works on the entry gate continuing.24 March 2023: This project is nearing completion and it has been fantastic to see a significant improvement to the bathrooms in both houses. Ceiling hoist beams installed in House 1 also increases capacity to assist clients with high physical support needs.
The crowning achievement is the renovation of the kitchen in House 2 (see the gallery below). This kitchen was not well used before because it worn and outdated, compared to the kitchen in House 1.
The automated and painted door to House 2 also makes direct entry more inviting for clients, staff and visitors, providing more privacy to clients in House 1.
14 March 2023: The project has started with a site office set up in the back alfresco area and contractors completing safety inductions.

Brightwater Balcatta
Works begin in late April and are continuing throughout June*.
They include:
- The kitchens will be replaced in House 1 and 3
- Each house will have new flooring in common client areas (kitchen, living and corridor)
- Bathroom renovations improving wheelchair accessibility
- Hoists will be installed in some bedrooms
- The entry door at each house will be upgraded to automatic doors with access cards

Brightwater Warnbro
We will be starting refurbishments at Brightwater Warnbro in late June and July*.
Works will include:
- Bathrooms
- The kitchens will be replaced
- New flooring for common client areas (kitchen, living and corridor)
- Hoists will be installed in some bedrooms
- The entry doors will be upgraded to automatic doors with access cards.
